I just want everyone looking at this to be aware that only ONE of these feathers is actually from a peacock. The others are from Ocellated Turkeys like this dude:
They are considered endangered by the Mexican government and near-threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) because they’ve been over-hunted and their habitat is being destroyed. They originate from just 50k square miles
in the Yucatán Peninsula.
They are also extremely difficult to raise in captivity, requiring year-round tropical temperatures and environment. Because of this, alongside their threatened status, captive bred birds are extremely expensive and relatively impossible to acquire as anything except an adult. The very few folks that I know of who raise them won’t risk shipping eggs or chicks, and they investigate before selling any birds, to ensure that adults are going to people who will be conscientious with their stock.
More people deserve to know about these gorgeous, rainbow birds.
