Last year for Christmas my mom bought me a throw pillow with Alexander Hamilton wearing a flower crown and the phrase “Listen up 5s, a 10 is speaking.” She didn’t understand it but instinctively knew I would love it. It was also coincidentally the last present opened of the morning, so everyone was watching me (my parents, brother, husband, three aunts, and one uncle). I was surprised and delighted, but they were wildly confused, even when I tried to explain it. Because honestly, how do you explain that many layers to non-internet people?
It’s like the time a former boss called asking about “what’s the latest dank meme the kids are into” for a thing she was trying to do and I had to tell her that the hot thing was iambic pentameter poetry about cows licking bread.
